On May 18th, hundreds of people came together to help raise money for all types of Cancer for the “Relay for Life” 24 hour event which took place in Orange County. Cancer doesn’t sleep, so why should we! At the event, teams get together and try to raise as much money as they can for Cancer! For 24 hours, we all take turns walking for Cancer at this event, which is held in a park were we have a track surrounding us. There is probably about 30 teams or more that get together and each team has a booth that they make their own. They sell things, have raffles and provide fun things to do. People from all over come to this event to walk the track for Cancer, enjoying some great food and fun prizes! Kids are also welcome to participate.
This year the theme was different cities or states of the world. Our team went with a country theme and picked “TEXAS”. We had so much fun dressing up in our best cowgirl/cowboy attire, decorating our booth in a country western theme, playing country music and having a blast dancing/chanting to help raise money to fight for Cancer. Our team went to different businesses and asked people for donations so we also did a raffle which all proceeds went to the American Cancer Society. Thank you to all the businesses who donated gift certificates to help sell tickets and raffle off some great prizes. Hair Club® also made a great donation, we are so thankful. Hair Club® also gave us pens and bottle openers to pass out, which people loved. Raising money can be tough! It is really intimidating to ask people to donate, but once they know that the proceeds go to a great cause they are willing to help as much as they can.
My sister is a survivor of Leukemia; she had it when she was 5 years old. I was too young to understand what was going on; growing up it was something that we just did not discuss. My mother is a wonderful strong women dealing with a child who had cancer and raising 2 other daughters was tough on her. My father worked hard to provide for us and pay all the medical bills, plus all other bills. Once I found out about this event I told my mom and sisters about it. They were both so excited and thrilled to help raise money for Cancer, after all these years of not talking about it my mom was ready to move forward. Knowing we could help other families pay for their medical bills was a blessing! Cancer affects so many people young and old; these days there is a higher rate of people who have Cancer. A lot of my family members and a few of my friends have been affected as well. Unfortunately, one of my Aunts did not survive and is now at peace in a better place.
Anyone who has been affected by Cancer in any way would love this event and most all states and cities hold this event. I am sure your cities can provide more information on this event for when and where it will be located. Seeing all those people there gives you a feeling of hope and you don’t feel alone. Our team was able to raise over $4,000 to fight Cancer! I can’t wait until next year! Our team will continue to fight! Thanks again Hair Club® for you generous donation.
